So September time has rolled around and over in the big apple, New York Fashion Week is in motion once again; day 'zero' kicked off yesterday with a spattering of shows (check out Lisa Perry's PVC affair) and hits full force today with BCBG Max Azria and Richard Chai amongst others.
NYFW always appeals to me because of the things we know we are going to see; up and coming designers, established designers developing their work and of course the sexy, Met-Gala worthy ball gowns given to us by the likes of ODLR and Monique Lhuillier. These are the top 5 collections that I'm especially excited to see in New York this season:
1. Narciso Rodriquez
Narciso Rodriguez's collections are always a favourite of mine due to their minimalism and discreet sexiness. The way the dresses sit on the body are so flattering and feminine. His word to describe this season's offering - 'clarity' - promises an evolution or streamlining on his minimalist foundation. Expect to see his ever-faithful legion of A-listers sitting front row.
2. Cushnie et Ochs
Cushnie et Ochs have been on my radar ever since they did an all-white collection a few seasons back; white dresses are my ultimate favourite item of clothing. On top of that they've been gaining some serious red-carpet coverage from the likes of Selena Gomez, Diane Kruger, Jamie Chung and J.Lo as well as being the favourite choice of models Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge Karolina Kurkova. The reason? The dresses are so feminine and so form-fitting; the type of dress that you put on and feel like a supermodel in. This season's offering will hopefully bring more red-carpet favourites.
Australia's most exciting fashion export, Dion Lee, has been making huge waves in recent seasons. His streetwise designs are fused with Australian inspiration, something which words extraordinarily well for him. Last season's slight departure from dress-territory saw a change in how I look at his work; I particularly liked his outerwear and tailoring. His real strength however lies in those bodycon dresses, layered in sheer material and fused digitally in ways that draw and stun the eye. Spring 2014 will hopefully expose his talents even further.
4. Marc Jacobs
Post Louis Vuitton life is suiting Marc Jacobs well. Some of his collections are far too out-there, far too garish for my liking and whilst others have loved them, the apparent appeal of them has flown way above my head. However last season's Manhattan return was his big moment and against the backdrop of clouds adorning the show space, we saw something heavenly. His softer and more relaxed approach was still full of the incredible detail we've come to expect, but it was ruffled into smoother, more refined dressing. If this season's offering is a continuation of that line then my love for Marc Jacobs will be growing.
5. Proenza Schouler
The prettiest duo in fashion also happen to be my favourite New York designers. Every season the boys at Proenza Schouler give us something fresh, exciting and detailed; a twist on their existing ethic or an innovative statement idea that catches everyone's eye. If you cast your mind back over their shows of previous seasons there will be something that sticks out; the tie die masterclass of Spring 2010, the coloured eel skirts at Spring 2012, the experimental techy-edged Spring 2013 collection or the minimalist and layered turn of Fall 2013. I love Proenza Schouler because they take abstract, over the top, complex ideas and conceptualise them from theory into reality. Their clothes are so intricate and yet so wearable and in line with the customer. I hope that Spring 2015 will bring something unexpected and yet as beautiful as ever.
